My son is a sandwich guy. Nothing fancy for him. But when he left his regular lunch box at school, I jumped at the chance to pack his long-neglected bento box.
(I hope the other kids don't make fun of him. I figure it's still okay to be cutesy in kindergarten, right?)
I kept it pretty simple. He's got a car-shaped boiled egg* on a bed of romaine lettuce and some crab and octopus mini hot dogs. I had to cut them by hand because I've lost my wiener cutters. Boo! There's some ranch dressing in the yellow bear bottle and some honey mustard in the square bottle. I tucked a little plastic spoon in as well, although I'm sure he'll use his fingers - which reminds me that I forgot the napkin. Whoops!
* It was supposed to be a fish-shaped boiled egg, to go with the crabs and octopi, but my son ate that one right away, leaving the car for lunch.
Thanks, everyone for the advice. It helped. It helped a lot.
Today was a rough day for a variety of reasons, but I'm feeling much better now. I had over-extended myself in a number of ways. I pared some things down and now I'm feeling better. It's time to go back to basics. And for me that means...
BENTO!
I'm going to pack a bento later. Photos to follow. :-)
Top tier: Grape tomato "bird" nestled in a stack of Trader Joe's Vegetable Bird Nests. Kitty cat sauce container keeping an eye on the "bird" while hiding behind an onigiri with salmon furikake.
Bottom tier: Mini pirogies with Morningstar Farms Buffalo Wings; salsa and sour cream in the sauce containers.
In other bento news, I became quite distressed when I thought I had lost my pink elephant sauce bottle (similar to the blue cat in this bento). I assumed it had gone down the garbage disposal, never to be seen from again. I even searched for a photo to post poor elephant's obit. But, then I found it inside a sakura-shaped vegetable cutter. Hurrah!
Also? I really think I need some mini hot dog cutters. Sigh.
I tend to obsess about bento when I'm trying really hard not to think about other things. It's no coincidence that I started packing bento in February, the month before my marriage completely imploded. Prepare to see a bento every day until my son returns from Tunis.
Top Tier: Trader Joe's Mini Cheesecake, Bleu Cheese Dressing, "Garden" Salad. (Yes, yes, I'm a total dork.)
Bottom Tier: Spinach & Cheese Tortellini tossed with olive oil, cherry tomatoes, and Trader Joe's Garlic and Herb Chicken Sausage.
I tried to stick to the bento ratio, which is, um... 4:3:1:1? Damn, now I can't even remember. Basically, I tried to include more veggies and less crap. I also tried to crop out most of my dirty counter, but it didn't really work. Maybe next time I'll use a better background. Or! I could actually clean my counter. Stay tuned to find out.
